Details of Plastic frame for Kieler nuc

Replacement plastic frame for the Kieler mating nuc: 170 × 90 × 22 mm, cell pattern already embossed.

In a mini nuc a frame fits or does not fit by millimetres, and the format name is not enough. This is the Kieler frame, also used by Segeberger and Holstein boxes. It is not the Apidea format, nor the Mini Plus one.

01 · FORMAT

A 170 mm top bar is the measurement that decides

The 170 mm is the top bar, the part that rests on the body; the 22 mm thickness sets the spacing between combs and the 90 mm is the height. The standard Kieler body runs four, and this one is sold singly.

02 · EMBOSSED CELL STRIP

Wax it before the first use

Under the top bar sits a 2-3 cm strip of embossed cell pattern: a starter guide, not a finished comb. The supplier says to wax it before first use, brushing on melted wax or dipping the frame up to the top bar. The bottom is open, with no bottom bar: the bees draw the comb.

03 · REUSE

Scraped and washed hot between batches

Unlike a wooden top bar, it takes boiling water. The side bars are thin and cantilevered: prise it off the comb without twisting it.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Sold singly, without wax and without the nuc. If your box is not a Kieler, Segeberger or Holstein, a 170 mm top bar has nothing to rest on.
