01 · WHY SPLIT IT

The nuc does not start on bare foundation

A mini-nuc stocked on foundation starts from nothing: the comb has to be drawn, and until it is there is neither brood nor stores. This system turns the order round. You join the two halves, put the whole frame into a production hive and leave it for weeks: the colony draws it, the queen lays in it, and it fills with sealed brood, pollen and honey. When you need it, you separate the two halves and each goes into a different compartment. The mating nuc then starts with mature material and bees emerging from that same comb, not with an empty box. That makes for a far better starting point — though the last word on whether the queen is accepted still belongs to the colony.

02 · HOW THEY JOIN

A milled rebate, no fittings and no screws

The two halves lock together on a rebate milled into the timber: you present one against the other and they hold, with no metal parts to add or to lose. They come already wired, semi-tensioned, so all that is left is to fit the foundation and tighten to your liking before embedding. On separating, the one precaution is to cut the wax along the joint with the hive tool before you pull: the colony will have welded the two halves with propolis and wax, and forcing them without cutting takes comb with it.

03 · HOW MANY DO I NEED

Two units per two-compartment nuc

The sum is simple, since each unit is two halves. A two-compartment Langstroth mating nuc holds four half frames, two per compartment: that is two units of this product. If you are running several batches in parallel, multiply by the number of nucs you want loaded at once, and add a few spare: in queen rearing the expensive thing is not the frame, it is being out of mature material in the wrong week.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Joined, it measures like any ordinary Langstroth brood frame, so it goes into any brood box of that format while it fills. The size is the first thing to check: it will not go in Dadant.
