Rigid beeswax foundation sheet, 100 % beeswax with 5.4 mm cells, sold singly in six formats.
This is how to buy foundation when you only need a few sheets: to hive a swarm, set up a nucleus or refit the frames of one colony. The one thing to get right is the size, and your frame decides it. For a Dadant hive, measure the top bar: 48 cm is US or Spanish Dadant and takes the 42 × 27; 47 cm is Dadant Blatt, the French one, and takes the 41 × 26.
01 · WHICH SIZE?
The frame decides, not the name of the hive
It always comes out slightly smaller than the inside of the frame: that margin is normal and nothing needs trimming.

02 · THE WAX
Rigid, from Spanish beekeepers
The single sheet is the rigid version: it is cooled fast on the roller as it is embossed and comes out firm, which is why it copes well with the heat inside the frame. Its only ingredient is beeswax, bought from Spanish beekeepers; the process and the lab parameters are in the technical data sheet. Colour and smell vary from batch to batch: they are not a sign of quality.
03 · HANDLING AND FITTING
Warm, it works; cold, it snaps
Beeswax turns pliable at around 30-35 °C and melts at 61-66 °C. So in summer a sheet may arrive slightly warped: lay it flat, in the shade, with a little weight on top for a few hours, and it recovers its shape. Cold does the opposite: rigid foundation turns brittle and a corner snaps off easily. To fit it, the frame must be wired: the sheet rests on the wires and is embedded into them by heating them with an electric embedder or running a spur embedder along them. Bees draw it readily during a nectar flow and with plenty of young bees; in a dearth it stays undrawn.
FROM THE APIARY
If you are fitting frames in cold weather, bring the sheets indoors a few hours beforehand and work in a warm room: almost every breakage with rigid foundation comes from handling it cold, not from the wax.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Sold singly. If your order gets close to what a pack holds (40 to 90 sheets depending on the format), look at the 5 kg beeswax foundation: it works out cheaper per sheet, and it is the only one offered in a flexible version, for cold areas, and in the Dadant Blatt super size, 41 × 13.

Can these sheets be used to make candles?
Yes. They are 100 % beeswax, the same wax as the 5 kg pack, and they work both ways: rolled around a wick, or melted and poured into a mould. The single sheets are rigid: to roll them, warm them first in a heated room or with a hair dryer, because cold they snap when folded. If you roll a lot of candles, the flexible version, which bends without cracking, comes in the 5 kg pack. For melting the type does not matter: what counts is the weight, from about 55 g for a half-super (42 × 13) sheet to about 125 g for a Dadant US one. There is no “candle” cut size: pick the one that matches the candle length you want.
