01 · IT ARRIVES WIRED AND TENSIONED

What you save is not the wire, it is the afternoon

Wiring and tensioning a frame by hand takes minutes; a hundred frames takes an afternoon, and the tension ends up uneven between the first and the last. This one comes with the stainless steel wire already fitted and tensioned, so the foundation goes straight in. That correct tension is what holds the wax so it does not buckle in the heat or sag in the extractor, which is when a loaded comb pulls hardest. And being stainless, the wire does not rust in damp conditions or after repeated washing — though there is a trade-off: stainless conducts heat less well than galvanised, so embedding foundation by heat needs a transformer of at least 24 V. With 12 V or 9 V units the wire takes too long, or never melts the wax at all.

02 · HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL

Each orientation solves a different thing

We stock this same frame in both versions and the price difference is pennies, so it is worth choosing on merit rather than on what happens to be in stock. Horizontal wires work against the weight: a loaded comb pulls downwards and they hold it, which is what tells in the extractor. Vertical wires run the same way the knife travels when you uncap, so they do not cross its path. If you uncap a lot by knife, vertical will suit you better; if you want holding power in the extractor, horizontal.

03 · STRAIGHT OR HOFFMANN

Who decides the spacing between frames

That is the other decision, and it explains why a Hoffmann costs around 20 % more. A Hoffmann frame has widened side bars at the top: push them together and they set the correct spacing themselves, with nothing else needed. A straight frame like this one needs you to set the spacing, with spacers or castellated runners in the box. If your equipment already has runners, the straight frame is cheaper and works just as well; if you are setting up from scratch and want to forget about it, the Hoffmann pays for itself in handling time.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The horizontal wiring works with standard Langstroth foundation sheets, and takes both natural and manufactured wax. It serves equally for brood box or super — that is decided by your management, not by the frame. And do not forget the point above: if your box has no spacers or runners, you will have to fit them, because a straight frame does not set the distance between combs on its own.
