This is the French measure: the top bar is 47 cm. The US Dadant is 48 cm — one centimetre that decides whether the frame rests on the rebate or drops into the box. Measure the top bar of a frame you already use before ordering.

01 · COMPATIBILITY

47 or 48 cm — both are called “Dadant”

Dadant Blatt is the usual format in France and Italy; the US Dadant, a centimetre wider, is what you mostly find in Spain and in much of the export trade. The boxes look alike and the name is nearly the same, but a 47 cm frame will not rest in a box built for 48. A ruler across the top bar of a frame you already own settles it in ten seconds.

02 · ASSEMBLY

Waxing it before first use is not optional

It comes as a single piece: nothing to assemble, no wire to tension — which tells when you are replacing frames by the dozen. But the cell base is bare plastic, and dry it takes the bees considerably longer to draw. Brush or roll a thin coat of melted beeswax on before you put it in —ideally wax from your own apiary— and they work it like a wooden one.

03 · CLEANING

No wire and no joints to come apart

Being one piece, it can be scraped and rinsed without anything working loose: lift off propolis and wax while they are still soft, then rinse with very hot water. If you also intend to disinfect, follow a documented protocol with proper protection; do not improvise with caustic products — besides burning, they can attack the plastic.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is a super frame, and that is a matter of height

It stands 16 cm tall, the half-depth super size. In a Dadant Blatt brood chamber the frame is 47 × 30 cm, so this one will not do there — not because of the material, but because it only reaches halfway down the box.
