Layens pine frame in the special «Castellón» size: 36 × 39.5 cm, wired and ready to wax.

Half a centimetre separates it from the standard Layens. In regional woodware, that decides whether the frame seats or rattles.

01 · HALF A CENTIMETRE

36 against 36.5: the size that decides

The ordinary Layens frame is built at 36.5 × 39.5 cm. This one goes to 36 × 39.5, and those five millimetres are the whole difference between resting properly on the rebate and sitting short or forced.

It is a very local size, from the north of the Valencia region and the south of Catalonia. Before ordering spares, take out an old frame and measure it across the top bar: quicker than sending a whole box back.

02 · THE BUILD

Wired at the factory, and the sheet that suits it

It arrives wired, so all that is left is tensioning and waxing. In a Layens the frame is the whole hive — one body, no supers — so a warped comb cannot be moved up a storey: it stays there all season.

That is why it pays to go over the wire tension before waxing, and not to mix two sizes inside the same box.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Sold singly, without wax. If your hive is a standard Layens, the frame you want is the 36.5 cm one, not this.
