01 · THE WAX HAS TO BE WARM

The mistake that costs

A sheet just out of a cold store is brittle: the wheel does not cut, it cracks, and the sheet breaks where it should not.

Cut it at room temperature, with the sheet lying flat on a smooth surface. Too warm is no good either: soft wax stretches ahead of the wheel instead of parting.

02 · YOU CUT AGAINST A GUIDE

Never freehand

The wheel follows whatever you put beside it. Use a rule or a template of exactly the size you need and run the wheel pressed against the edge.

The guards on the handle keep your fingers out of the wheel's path while you apply that pressure.

03 · HALVES AND THIRDS

One box of sheets for everything

A brood sheet gives two super sheets cut in half, or three cut in thirds. That is where the saving is: you buy one format and adapt it.

It is also the tool for preparing thin sheets for cut comb honey, where the size has to match the frame exactly.

04 · THE WHEEL, CLEAN

And sharp

Wax sticks to the edge, and a coated wheel tears instead of cutting. Wipe it every few sheets.

And keep it sharp: it is the only part that works, and a straight edge depends on it.
