The APIDEA® mating nuc lets you work with a small population of bees and check the queen’s first laying pattern on three mini frames made for this system.
Its rigid polystyrene body measures 24 × 15 × 17 cm. The compact format makes several units manageable, provided you keep track of each queen and check food supplies regularly.
01 · ASSEMBLY
Fit the frames with wax starter strips
Assemble the three plastic frames and fit wax starter strips in the guides provided. Check that they are secure before stocking the nuc: a fallen strip leaves the bees without a guide for drawing comb. The unit includes a removable internal feeder holding about 500 g of fondant, a clear crown board with an opening and closing flap, sliding floor, front slider, ventilation screen and queen excluders.
02 · STOCKING AND CHECKS
Weigh the bees and record each unit
The manufacturer recommends about 100 g of young bees, scooped in with a ladle or a large cup; weighing them gives you evenly stocked units. Mist them lightly with water first so they fly less, fill through the sliding floor and keep the nuc somewhere cool. A ripe queen cell or a newly emerged virgin queen goes in through the opening in the crown board. Then come three days of confinement in a cool, dark place, spraying the ventilation screen above the closed entrance several times a day. On the evening of the third day, take the nuc to the apiary or mating station and open the front slide fully. According to APIDEA, you will normally have a mated queen after 10–14 days if weather and drones allow: check the laying then and record the date for each unit.
03 · EXPANSION AND CLEANING
Five frames need a different feeding arrangement
Removing the internal feeder makes room for five mini frames in the body. APIDEA specifies its top feeder for this configuration; the two additional frames and feeder are purchased separately. Between batches, remove debris and clean with warm water and products suitable for beekeeping equipment. The manual warns that not all components withstand boiling water or acids: polystyrene needs different handling from a wooden box.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Choose a format you can manage
This unit is intended for mating and early laying checks, using small APIDEA frames. If you need to maintain more bees or leave longer gaps between visits, compare the capacity of other mating nuc formats before planning your batch. Have feed and a destination ready for queens that start laying. The box cannot guarantee a mating date or replace inspection of the brood pattern.
