47 cm TOP BAR: DADANT BLATT, NOT THE 48 CM US | 38-47 MM WALLS IN 80 KG/M³ EPS |
3 kg ASSEMBLED AND READY, AGAINST 15 FOR A WOODEN ONE | 55 × 31 × 40 CM OUTSIDE |
Six-frame Dadant Blatt nuc by P-hive in high-density expanded polystyrene, 80 kg/m³, with walls of 38 mm on the long sides and 47 on the short ones: it arrives assembled, with a hygienic mesh floor and tray, disc entrance and lid, and weighs about 3 kg. It is the French and Italian size, with a 47 cm top bar; 48 cm Dadant US frames, the usual ones in Spain, do not fit. 55 × 31 × 40 cm outside.
A small colony has few bees to heat its box: every degree lost through the wall is replaced by eating, which is why in a nuc the material decides whether it takes off or stalls.
01 · THE SIZE
This nuc is Dadant Blatt, the standard in France and Italy: brood frames of 47 × 30 cm, with a 47 top bar. Dadant US frames, with a 48 top bar, the usual ones in Spain, do not sit in the rests. If you will stock it with frames you already have, measure the top bar; if your apiary is Langstroth, the same box exists in that size (2307).
02 · THE MATERIAL
High-density expanded polystyrene, 80 kg/m³, with 38 mm walls on the long sides and 47 on the short ones: the maker likens that insulation to about 15 cm of wood, and in practice it is an inside temperature that does not follow the day-to-night swings, exactly what a newly made colony cannot compensate. It weighs about 3 kg assembled, against fifteen for a wooden one. It comes white and must be painted: light-coloured water-based paint outside, which is what protects polystyrene from the sun.
03 · WHAT IT BRINGS
It comes assembled, nothing to glue or screw: 6-frame body, hygienic floor with mesh and removable tray to ventilate and count the varroa drop, rotating disc entrance to close, ventilate or let through, and lid. With the divider the sheet indicates it splits into two three-frame nucs to mate two queens in the same box. Frames and foundation come separately. Recyclable polystyrene; cleans with water and, if disinfecting is needed, with diluted bleach, never a blowtorch.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
The nuc is supplied assembled with hygienic floor, disc entrance and lid, without frames or paint.
