5 LANGSTROTH FRAMES | 48 × 23 cm FRAME SIZE |
Pine nucleus box for 5 Langstroth frames, with lid and the five wired frames included. For splits, collected swarms and colonies that need to winter in a small space.
It arrives with the wire untensioned: tensioning it and fitting the foundation is the first job, before you populate it.
01 · WHAT IT IS FOR
A nuc is the small box you end up needing: you make a split before the swarm leaves, hive a collected one, hold a mated queen in reserve or reinforce another colony — all without moving a whole hive or tying up a full box. And there is a less obvious use that long-time owners keep repeating: wintering a weak colony. In five frames the cluster covers proportionally more of the space and holds its heat with less effort than in a ten-frame box where it is lost.
02 · FIRST, THE FRAMES
The five frames arrive assembled with the wire threaded, untensioned — that is how they are supplied, not a bad batch. It is ten minutes' work per frame: tension the wire with the tool or by turning the nail until it rings, lay the sheet of foundation on and embed it with an electric embedder or by running current through the wire. Note that the frame has no groove in the top bar to seat the sheet: the foundation is held by the embedded wire, so that step is not optional.
03 · THE BOX
Against cardboard or chipboard, pine insulates better and survives seasons in the field. It has a metal migratory entrance — it closes for transport — and a galvanised-clad lid with quick-release catches. Two things worth knowing beforehand: the floor is solid, with no ventilation mesh, so with the entrance shut there is no air flow — for a long move or in the heat, give them ventilation from above or travel at night. And the five frames are a tight fit, flush: there is no room for a spacer or a sixth frame.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It takes a Langstroth deep frame, 48 × 23 cm, straight-sided or self-spacing Hoffman — though with Hoffman, whose shoulders are wider, the five are tighter still. Two formats people often ask about that do not fit the same way: the British and Irish National frame has a top bar about 5 cm shorter and will not reach the rebates; and the Langstroth shallow frame does rest properly, since the top bar is the same length, but being much less deep it hangs short and leaves a gap underneath.
