5 LANGSTROTH FRAMES | HDF HIGH DENSITY FIBREBOARD |
Five-frame Langstroth nuc in HDF with side catches: for taking swarms, making splits and moving colonies.
The box you reach for when you need a hive now and not one for twenty years: light, stackable and cheap enough to keep a few waiting in the trailer. It comes with or without the five frames, and that is the only choice to make.
01 · WHAT IT IS FOR
Its place is swarming and splitting season: catching a swarm, starting a nuc on five frames, keeping a new queen under observation or moving a colony without hauling a full hive. It stands outdoors for a season without trouble — some have overwintered in one up north — but let us be straight: this is a transition box. When the colony grows, it moves to a wooden hive. If it is going to live out in the field, painting the outside adds a lot of life, because HDF suffers under constant damp.
02 · THE CATCHES
The side catches hold the lid against the body, which is what lets you put it in the car with bees inside without straps or tape. They do not show in the catalogue picture and they are the good surprise buyers mention most. Even so, for a road trip close the entrance and avoid the hot hours: HDF insulates less than wood and a small box heats up fast.
03 · WITH OR WITHOUT FRAMES?
| With frames | Ready to take bees: five Langstroth frames included. The one for catching swarms without depending on bench time. |
|---|---|
| Without frames | The box alone. Worth it if you already have frames made up and waxed, or you prefer your own. |
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It is Langstroth brood format: it takes frames with a 480 mm top bar, not Dadant or Layens. There is no crown board, and some boxes come with a splinter or two around the staples: a minute with sandpaper and it is gone, and it does not affect use.
