Discover the Mini Plus Mating Nuc, designed to offer maximum comfort and efficiency in beekeeping. Made from high-density polystyrene, this nuc combines durability and lightness, making it easy to handle and transport.
A mating nuc stakes the queen on a fortnight. What decides it is how much heat it holds with the few bees inside.
Mini Plus mating nucleus in high-density Styropor® polystyrene, for six frames, with a ventilated floor and a removable base. A body of 305 × 305 × 170 mm, and 280 mm tall with the roof on.
01 · WHY POLYSTYRENE
In a production hive insulation is a comfort; in a mating nucleus it is the difference between the queen starting to lay or not. With a handful of bees inside, holding the brood nest at 35 °C is expensive, and high-density polystyrene does that work without burning through the stores.
In exchange it has to be treated differently from wood: it is not flamed to disinfect, it is not cleaned with solvents — water and a mild solution — and it is best kept in the shade, because sun degrades it in the end.
And one field detail learned the hard way: it weighs almost nothing. A stone on top or a strap, or the first strong wind tips it over.
02 · THE MINI PLUS FORMAT
Mini Plus is a step up from half-frame mini nucs: the queen has more laying surface, so she can be left longer, judged better on how she lays, and even overwintered if the colony can take it.
Now the important part before ordering: Mini Plus is a format with its own frame. Dadant, Langstroth and mini-nuc frames do not fit. And this nucleus is supplied without frames, so they have to be ordered separately, in wood or plastic.
The body is cubic and stackable, and the base comes off, so the same nucleus can grow with more modules or share a wall with others when grouped.
03 · OVERWINTERING IN GROUPS
Putting several Mini Plus wall to wall is not tidiness: each nucleus loses heat through fewer faces, and in winter that translates straight into survival. The cubic shape is meant for that, as it is for stacking and moving them without gaps.
The ventilated floor lets damp out, which builds up fast in a small volume, and doubles as a way to watch mite fall.
