47 cm FRAME TOP BAR | 5 FRAMES |
9.8 kg EMPTY WEIGHT | 4 CONFIGURATIONS |
Five-frame nuc in water-resistant HDF board, in the Dadant Blatt size: the French one, 47 cm top bar. It arrives assembled and needs no painting.
This is a box built for moving and selling swarms, not for overwintering: it comes cheap, it lasts season after season, and it lets you hand over the swarm with the nuc included without the price jumping. First, though, the size — that is where most people get caught.
01 · 47 OR 48 CM?
Dadant Blatt and Dadant US are the same box with a different top bar. The gap is one centimetre and there is no margin in it: measure the top bar of your frames before ordering.
| Dadant Blatt (this one) | Frame of 47 × 30 cm. The standard in France and Italy. |
|---|---|
| Dadant US | Frame of 48 × 30 cm. The usual size in Spain, and it will not go in here: it has its own nuc. |
02 · WHAT IT IS FOR
Worth saying plainly, because it is where nearly all the disappointment comes from: the HDF is thin and insulates little. For what it is built for — taking a swarm, moving a split, handing over a nuc you have sold, keeping spare boxes in the van — it does the job well, at a price where making your own is not worth the trouble. For getting through a cold winter inside, no: there you want timber or thick polystyrene. If the plan is to raise colonies in it and leave them there all year, this is not the nuc.
03 · THE FOUR VERSIONS
It comes in four combinations. They are worth a look before choosing on price, because one of them settles a common complaint.
| With or without frames | If you already have Blatt frames made up, the version without works out cheaper. If you are selling the whole swarm, the one that includes them saves you the assembly. |
|---|---|
| With or without spacer | The frame spacer is what holds the frames at a set distance and stops them shifting in transit. Without it the frame runs free — which is exactly what gets missed by anyone taking the cheapest version without knowing what they are leaving out. |
04 · HOW IT ARRIVES
It ships already assembled, with a metal-doored entrance on the side, ventilation in the floor and easy-open catches on the roof. The crown board carries a feed hatch and takes a frame feeder or a 1 kg round one. The water-resistant HDF needs no paint. One word on the finish, better said up front: where the staples go in, the laminate can chip a little. It comes with the material and the assembly — it shows, but it does not affect the structure.
