01 · THE ASSEMBLY

Fold and slot, and nothing else

The box comes from a single die-cut blank, so assembly is folding and slotting: you need no hot-melt glue and no waiting for anything to set. For transport it is worth taping the joints and corners, which is what gives it rigidity when it travels loaded. It stores flat until the day you need it, which is what lets you keep several ready without taking up space.

02 · THE VENTILATION

Side holes, and a mesh you add yourself

It has side holes meant for ventilation, and that is where you should fit a mesh if you are going to move the box with bees inside. The mesh is not included. A closed nuc in the sun turns into a heat trap in minutes, so sort the ventilation before loading, not after.

03 · WHAT IT IS FOR

Collecting swarms and selling nucs

It is the box for the swarm you collect and the nuc you sell: light, cheap per unit and enough for the move and the first few days. If you get a call about a swarm settled in a wall or a roof, this is the box you can keep in the car without thinking twice. It takes Langstroth frames, and that is what fixes its size.

04 · THE LIMIT

Cardboard, and cardboard does not winter

Double-wall board stands up to the intended use, but it is not made to live outdoors: rain and sustained damp finish it off. Treat the box for what it is — housing for weeks, not for seasons — and move the colony into permanent equipment as soon as it settles.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is supplied flat and without frames. Count on tape, and on mesh for the holes, if you are going to move it loaded.
