Painting: outside only, and not just any paint
Polystyrene does not rot and does not take up moisture, but the sun does attack it: a coat of paint is not cosmetic, it is what makes the nuc last decades. Use water-based exterior paint or polyurethane, preferably UV-protected. What must not go on it is enamel or anything with solvent: they attack polystyrene. And paint the outside only — leave the inside bare, because the bees end up coating it in propolis anyway.
