01 · FITTING THE DIVIDER

It goes in before the plastic rail

Here is the detail that has had more than one person reaching for a file: the divider board goes in before the top plastic rail, not after. In that order it slides in without forcing and without cutting anything. And the entrance does close completely — the cover does not slide, it turns. Two small movements, and whoever does not know them ends up thinking the part came badly made.

02 · WHY POLYSTYRENE

It gets going earlier in spring

High-density EPS insulates far better than wood, and in a small volume that shows: the colony spends less energy holding the nest temperature and puts it into brood instead. In the cold it starts earlier and in high summer it does not turn into an oven. It weighs a fraction of a wooden nuc, so it moves with one hand, and it does not rot or take up moisture.

03 · THE PAINT

Outside only, and not just any paint

Water does not attack polystyrene, but sun does: a coat of paint is not cosmetic, it is what makes the nuc last decades. Use exterior water-based or polyurethane paint, ideally UV-protected. What must never touch it is enamel or anything with solvent, which eats it. And paint outside only: the inside is left bare, because the bees end up coating it in propolis anyway.

04 · FOR MOVING IT

There are no catches

Roof, body and floor seat on their own profile, with no clips or catches. Standing still they are not needed, but to transport it you have to strap it down — that is what people who move it often say they miss. In exchange, the roof is reversible: turned over it opens extra ventilation, which is exactly what a move with bees inside calls for.

Frames are not included. It takes Langstroth frames with a 48 cm top bar, the standard size.
