01 · THE BLUE IS NOT DECORATION

A virgin that picks the wrong door does not come back

Drifting is the classic problem of a yard full of nucs: identical units, close together and small. A worker that slips into the one next door is nothing; a virgin queen returning from a mating flight that enters the neighbour's, dies.

That is why mating nucs are told apart — colour, orientation, spacing — and why the colour of the body is a management detail, not a finish.

02 · THE REAL TIMINGS

From cell to laying queen is about three weeks

Worth having the calendar clear before deciding how many to buy. A virgin needs five or six days to mature, flies to mate over the following days and starts laying around two weeks after emerging.

So from introducing a cell to taking out a laying queen is on the order of three weeks, not one. That sum gives you the rounds one nuc can do in a season, and how many you need for the rearing you have planned.

03 · THE POLYSTYRENE

It insulates, and here that counts more than in a hive

A colony on four mini frames has very little mass to thermoregulate with: it heats up and cools down far faster than a hive. Expanded polystyrene damps exactly that, which is what makes so small a volume workable in summer and on cold spring nights.

The trade-off is a soft material: it scratches, it takes no metal scraper, and bees will chew it if they find a start. Clean it without a sharp tool.

04 · WHAT IT COMES WITH

Entrances, feeder and frames

Two adjustable entrances: a Ø 50 mm front one with a rotating disc, and a Ø 80 mm bottom one with a ventilation mesh — the one that lets you close the nuc and move it without suffocating the colony.

The feeding compartment sits behind a queen excluder, so the bees feed and the queen does not cross it. And the 4 mini frames are included, with wooden bars and plastic sides.

Mating nucs are bought in batches, not one at a time: the number comes out of the rearing calendar.
