01 · ASSEMBLY

Supplied flat-packed, and that has its upside

The nuc comes flat and folds together, no tools. It takes a fraction of the room in the store and in the car, which is what lets you carry several spares on the trailer without the bulk. In exchange, set aside a while the first time: build one complete before you need ten, check every fold seats and the lid closes, and you will know how long the rest take.

02 · THE ADJUSTMENT

A centimetre either way on the top-bar rest

The rests the top bar sits on allow ±1 cm of adjustment. It is not a whim: home-made Layens frames vary from workshop to workshop, and that margin is what makes your usual frames seat without slack or forcing. Set it with one of your own frames in place, before the bees go in.

03 · THE FORMAT

This is the Layens, and it has siblings

It is the question we get: the Ridenuc family also comes in Langstroth and in Dadant, each with its own body and measurements. If you work another format, do not force this one with frames that are not its own — look for yours in the catalogue, because ±1 cm corrects workshop tolerances, not a change of format.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Before moving hives with it, secure the lid: polypropylene is light, and on the road a tight catch becomes an open one.
