01 · THE BELLOWS

Leather, not imitation

This is the difference that justifies the price and the one you notice three years in: the bellows is wood and leather, not imitation. Imitation crazes in the sun and eventually splits along the fold; leather ages but keeps working, and it is the part that decides how long a smoker used every week actually lasts.

The other critical part is the inner grate, which keeps the ember clear of the base. Without it, ash builds up at the bottom, blocks the air inlet and the smoker goes out by itself.

02 · THE DRAW

A long firebox and a vented catch

With a 200 mm firebox in a 270 mm body, there is plenty of run for the smoke to cool before it leaves. That is what gets it out dense, white and cool — hot smoke does not calm a colony, it stirs it up.

The lid closes with a vent: it is not fully sealed, and that small breath is what stops the fire smothering while the smoker rests between hives.

03 · PROTECTION AND THE END OF THE DAY

Cage, hook and how to put it out

The outer cage wraps the hot body: it keeps fingers from burns and, above all, lets you hold it between your knees without the suit taking a hole. The hook keeps it hanging off the edge of the hive, upright and to hand.

And the end, which few listings mention: a smoker is not put away alight. Plug the nozzle with a handful of grass to smother it and let it cool outside the vehicle. Clearing ash and tar now and then keeps the draw, and with it the cool smoke.
