01 · WHAT COMES WITH IT

The liquid is bought separately

Worth saying early, because it is the costliest confusion on this page: the device comes with its heating element, but not with the liquid. It has to go on the order, and that is where you pick the formula: Native Polaris or Native Nova.

And one condition of the system: it works only with the brand's own liquids and accessories. No essences of your own, no home-made mixes — much like a cartridge that takes no other ink.

02 · NO FIRE

What you gain with no embers

A smoker carries live embers, and in summer that shapes the day: many regions have fire-risk periods with restrictions on open flame — check your own local rules before going into the apiary. With no combustion that problem disappears, and so do the burns and the hot smoker in the boot of the car.

Nor is there smoke settling on the frames. The battery lasts for around 40 hives and a bottle for some 300 visits, so a normal day is done without recharging anything.

03 · HOW FAR IT GOES

Fine on a calm colony; on a stingy one, keep the smoker

It is the most honest thing that can be said about it, and the users say it themselves: on a calm colony it does the job, and on a defensive one or during a long inspection many beekeepers still carry the smoker as backup.

The maker admits as much in its own range: the Native Polaris liquid carries three active molecules, and the Native Nova adds a fourth precisely to come closer to the performance of a conventional smoker.

04 · THE DEVICE

Light, repairable and with two years of warranty

It weighs half a kilo, charges from any phone charger over USB and starts in five seconds: nothing to light and no fuel to carry.

The maker declares it repairable by the user and covers it with two years of warranty, which on a battery device is what decides whether it lasts three seasons or ten.
