A smoker that goes out halfway through a visit is not an annoyance: it is a colony turning against you.
Dadant and Sons Jumbo American smoker, in stainless steel, with a full-diameter wire guard and a wood-and-leather bellows. The firebox measures 10 cm across by 25 tall — 33.5 cm with the lid.
01 · WHY JUMBO
Ten centimetres across by twenty-five tall make room for a deep bed of embers, and that is the difference from a small smoker: the smoke comes out steady through the whole visit instead of rising and falling with whatever is left burning.
The trade-off is honest: it takes up more room and weighs more than a workaday smoker. This is the smoker for someone spending the whole morning opening hives, not for someone checking two.
02 · HOW TO LIGHT IT
The order that works: a base that catches easily — fine shavings or ink-free cardboard — and on top material that lasts: pine cones, natural wood pellets or hessian. Do not fill it to the brim at once: light a bed and feed it a little at a time.
A firebox packed cold and tight is what produces that thin, hot smoke that annoys bees. Good smoke is plentiful, cool and white.
03 · THE GUARD AND THE HOOK
It carries a wire guard around the full diameter and a hook: hang it on the edge of the box or on the frame rest and leave it there, instead of laying it down in the grass. In summer that is not comfort, it is fire prevention.
And to put it out, the old way: block the spout — a handful of green grass in the nozzle will do — and wait. A smoker stowed still lit in the boot of a car is a problem waiting its turn.
04 · THE BELLOWS AND CLEANING
The bellows is wood and leather. It is the part that dies first on cheap smokers, and here it is precisely the part that holds up: you can pump it with feel, without tiring your hand over a long day.
The body is stainless steel and all it asks is that you scrape the tar off the neck and the lid now and then. Left alone, the outlet narrows and the draw gets worse.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

| ✓ FITS | Long days and large apiaries, where refilling costs time. |
| ✕ DOESN'T FIT | Anyone after the lightest one for two hives in the garden. |
