Details of API-CLOUD smoker fuel 60 litres

Api-Cloud is a plant-based smoker fuel made in France from chipped maritime pine branches, steam-distilled for a minimum of three hours and then sun-dried. That steam stage is what sets it apart from ordinary wood shavings or leaf litter: it draws off the pine's essential oils and terpenes, the very things that foul the smoke. Supplied in a 60-litre sack.

⚙️ Lights directly — no paper, no firelighter

A handful in the base of the smoker, pressed down lightly, then a flame to it: it catches without any kindling fuel, though the manufacturer allows a sheet of dry paper on a damp day. Across several apiaries in one morning, that minute per stop adds up.

🔧 Steam-distilled and sun-dried

Whole branches of French maritime pine, chipped and passed through a current of steam that draws off the volatile compounds while cleaning and disinfecting the material; the drying that follows is done in the sun. What comes out of the sack is pine needles and wood chips, straw to brown in colour. No synthetic fabrics, no glued timber, no printed paper — those bring foreign odours into the apiary and can taint the honey.

🧹 Why this smoke doesn't catch in the throat: the terpenes have been removed

Untreated pine carries essential oils and phytoactive terpenic compounds — aromatic resin, in short — responsible for the acrid smoke that catches in the throat and the tar that builds up inside the smoker. Distillation draws these off before bagging: the manufacturer's technical sheet declares the product free of essential oils, tars and phytoactive terpenes. What you notice is smoke that is white, plentiful and cool. Bear in mind that smoke does not sedate bees or disable their defence: it distracts them and triggers crop-filling for a few minutes. It pays to use it sparingly: two or three puffs at the hive entrance and under the crown board, not a constant cloud.

🌿 Suitable for organic beekeeping

The manufacturer's technical sheet describes it as a 100 % natural product, usable in organic farming and beekeeping, since it is obtained solely by distillation and solar drying, with no chemical additives. If you work under certification, check this against your certifying body before logging it in your logbook: it is the certifying body that validates an input, not the supplier's label.

💡 Two tricks: the grass filter and the two grades

The manufacturer recommends a trick from old hands: once the smoker is lit and full, place a plug of green grass on top as a filter. The charge burns underneath and the smoke passes out through the damp grass, cooler and without sparks. And because it is chipped material, the grade is not uniform: fine needle for lighting up, coarser chip for topping up. Reseal the airtight sack after every use: fuel that has picked up damp takes twice the effort to light.

⚠ Check that the smoke comes out cool and spark-free, as the manufacturer states. In summer and in dry country, light up well away from dry grass and carry the smoker out cold or in a closed metal bucket. No fuel removes the fire risk.
