01 · WHY BIG

Distance, not capacity

The advantage of a tall body is not that more fuel fits — though it does — but that the smoke has further to travel before it comes out, and on the way it cools. A small smoker working hard spits hot smoke and sparks; one of 32.5 cm delivers dense, mild smoke, the kind that makes bees drop between the frames instead of boiling up.

The 100 mm diameter helps from another angle: a whole hand goes in to light it and to refill without scraping your knuckles on the rim.

02 · THE CAGE

The part that saves the suit

The protective cage wraps the body and keeps the hot metal away from everything else. It stops you burning your fingers, but above all it does the other thing: you can hold it between your knees to open a hive without the suit taking a hole — which is how half the bee suits in the world get ruined.

It also carries a built-in hook to hang it off the edge of the hive and keep it upright and within reach while you work.

03 · LIGHTING, KEEPING AND KILLING IT

The three moments that decide

Light it from the bottom up: something fine that catches fast first — shavings, ink-free card, dry grass — and the dense fuel on top, pine cones or jute. Then slow, steady puffs, not sharp ones: continuous air makes embers, sharp air lifts ash.

And the end, which almost nobody mentions: a smoker is not put away alight. Plug the nozzle with a handful of grass or a cork to smother it, and let it cool outside the vehicle. A smoker smouldering in a boot is a fire waiting to happen.

The bellows is the part that ages first: kept out of the sun, the leatherette lasts many more seasons.
