Bee brush with a single 26 cm row and 45.5 cm overall length, plastic handle. Sweep with gentle strokes from the centre outwards: pressing traps bees between the bristles. For a small apiary and inspections; for big harvests the double row of horsehair tires the hand less.

Details of Plastic handle bee brush

26 cm

ROW OF BRISTLES

45.5 cm

OVERALL LENGTH

A light single-row bee brush with a plastic handle: for sweeping bees off the comb before harvesting or closing the hive.

The 45.5 cm overall length keeps your hand away from the comb and leaves room for the wrist.

01 · HOW TO SWEEP

Soft strokes from the centre out, letting the bristle flex

The gesture matters more than the tool. Sweep with short, gentle strokes, from the middle of the frame towards the edge, letting the bristles bend on their own. Pressing is counterproductive for two reasons: bees get caught between the bristles — and a crushed bee releases alarm pheromone that unsettles the whole hive — and the bristle tips can scuff cappings and cells. With the long row you cover much of the frame in each pass.

02 · ONE ROW OR TWO

This is the light one; the double row moves more bees per stroke

With bee brushes the real difference is the number of rows. One row — this one — is lighter, easier in tight spaces and enough to work frame by frame in a small apiary. The double row of horsehair shifts more bees per pass and holds up better through a full day of harvesting, at the cost of weight and bulk. If you are going to clear many supers in a row, the two-row brush tires the hand less.

03 · BETWEEN HIVES

What the brush picks up travels with it

A brush loaded with honey and propolis goes from one hive to the next, and that is more than dirt. Remove wax, honey and propolis when you finish and let it dry completely before storing — damp and sugary, it attracts everything. And if a colony shows suspect symptoms, do not carry on the round with the same brush without applying your hygiene protocol: few tools touch the comb as much.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The brush is the tool of the small apiary and of inspections: precise, cheap and maintenance-free. As the harvest grows, mechanical clearing — a blower or an escape board — is faster and disturbs the colony less, though the brush is still needed for the finishing touches.

✓ FITSAny frame and any hive size: it does not depend on the format.
✕ IT IS NOTThe tool for clearing many supers in a row: mechanical clearing wins there.
