01 · FLAT BLADE AND J-HOOK

Scrape with one end, pull the frame with the other

The flat blade is the everyday one: it scrapes wax and propolis off floors, walls and top bars, and levers super from brood box. The J-hook is what sets it apart from the European tool: it catches under the frame top bar and pulls upwards, which is how a stuck frame comes out without straining the lug. There is also a nail-puller hole for quick repairs at the apiary, and the red blade makes it visible when it drops into the grass.

02 · THE HOOK COMES TIGHT

What is worth knowing before you buy it

This is a budget tool and the finish shows it at one specific point, reported by more than one beekeeper: the hook angle is fairly tight, and on closely packed frames it takes a moment to slip under the top bar. It does not stop you working — you go in from the side — and those who use it daily often open the angle slightly with a file and set it to their liking. If you want a fine hook straight from the factory, the professional tool with a wooden handle does it better.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is the right choice as a first hive tool or as the spare that lives in the car. If your work is more scraping corners than lifting frames, look at the red European one: it swaps the hook for a right-angled tip.
