Details of European Hive Tool

The European hive tool: a flat blade to prise and a right-angled end for the corners the others cannot reach.

25 cm of stainless steel painted red. This is the one for scraping and cleaning; if you want a hook to lift frames, that is the American one.

01 · THE TWO ENDS

One blade to prise, one L to scrape

The extra-flat end goes between two propolis-sealed frames, or between super and brood box, and levers them apart without splintering the wood. The other end is bevelled at a right angle: that is the one that scrapes wax and propolis from inside corners, from the box rim and from the frame top bars, where a straight blade slips. Stainless steel: wash it with soap and water, season after season.

02 · THE RED AND THE HOLE

The two things that stop you losing it

It is the tool you put down most often during an inspection. The red paint makes it visible in the grass, and the hole in the handle — besides hanging it in the workshop — takes a long cord you can loop round your wrist or belt: both hands stay free and it does not stay behind in the apiary.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Choose this one if your daily work is scraping and prising. If what you need is to lift stuck frames, the American tool has a J-hook at one end. And if you work long stretches, the professional one with a wooden handle grips better through a honey-covered glove.
