01 · WHAT IT DOES

It restores the pressure; it does not repair the grip

Over the years the spring loses tension: the tool opens further than it should and the frame wobbles as you hold it. Replacing it restores the original pressure for a fraction of what a new frame grip costs. What it does not fix is a bent jaw or a worn pivot: if the play comes from there, a new spring will not hide it.

02 · FITTING IT

It goes on tight, and you have to expect that

This is the complaint that reaches us, so it goes up front: the coil is a press fit on the shaft, so it does not go on by pushing with your fingers. Work with the tool open and resting on something, use pliers to seat the coil, and then place each leg on its arm. Do not open the spring further than needed to get it on: every time a coil is forced apart it loses part of the tension you came to recover.

03 · THE STEEL

Why any old wire will not do

It is made of spring steel, which is what takes thousands of opening cycles without staying open. Ordinary wire of the same gauge gives way within a season. Keep spares dry: rust on a 1 mm wire is not a cosmetic detail, it is lost section.
