Frame-lifter hook for starting the removal of frames held down at the rest by propolis. Its curved serrated hook works with the small integral foot: the hook engages the frame while the foot forms a fulcrum, allowing a progressive first lift before you take over with your hands.

The tool is 19 cm long and combines a commercially declared stainless-steel head with a PVC handle. This is a dedicated lifter, not a flat hive tool: it is intended to break the initial bond and create working room, not to scrape broad surfaces, separate hive bodies or carry the frame throughout an inspection.

01 · BEFORE LIFTING

Free the propolis bond and make room before loading the hook

Open the colony under suitable inspection conditions and move bees away from the intended contact area. First loosen the neighbouring frames with an appropriate tool and shift them slightly; pulling a frame while it remains wedged between its neighbours increases the chance of rolling bees or twisting comb. If both ends are propolised, free them separately. The aim is not to wrench the frame out in one movement, but to reduce the bond until the hook only has to begin a controlled rise.

02 · HOOK, FULCRUM AND LEVERAGE

Seat the foot on sound wood and make sure the serrations are fully engaged

Place the hook beneath an accessible part of the frame lug or top bar and rest the integral foot on a firm wooden surface. Before applying pressure, check that no bee is trapped between metal and wood and that the hook is clear of the comb. Lower the handle slowly to raise one end by only a few millimetres, then move to the other end and repeat. The serrations help maintain contact, but they cannot prevent a slip caused by a poor angle, a weak support or a sudden pull.

03 · LIFT AND TOOL CARE

Once released, take the frame straight up with both hands

When both ends are free, hold the top bar with both hands and lift the frame slowly and vertically, allowing bees to move out of the way. Do not twist the frame out, lever against the comb or use the handle as a hammer. After the inspection, remove propolis and wax from the metal head, then clean and disinfect it using a method compatible with stainless steel and PVC and dry it thoroughly. Keep the PVC handle away from flame. Inspect the teeth, hook, foot, shank and handle joint before reuse.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Fit depends on access to the frame, not only on the hive name

This tool suits movable frames whose lug or top bar leaves room for the hook and whose box provides a stable seat for the foot. Check that geometry when using spacers, runners, closed top ends, plastic frames or an unusual format. No maximum load, stainless grade, dishwasher suitability or chemical compatibility has been documented. Use a flat hive tool for broad scraping or separating boxes; use a frame grip or both hands to hold a frame after it leaves the box.
