01 · WHAT IT SOLVES

Break the seal and lift without crushing cells

Most of an inspection goes on freeing frames stuck down with propolis and lifting them without damage. The gripper takes the frame by the top bar and lifts it vertically, hands away from the bees and without pressing comb against the box wall — which is how cells get crushed and stings get earned. The scraper blade at the other end does the rest: cleaning wax and propolis off the floor, the walls and the crown board, and parting frames before you draw them.

02 · THE TECHNIQUE

Lever on the neighbouring frame, never on the one you are lifting

This is what separates a tool that works from one that marks the timber. Grip the top bar and fulcrum on the adjacent frame or on the rim of the box, never on the face of the frame you are extracting: lever against it and the force concentrates on one point of the bar and dents it. A short firm movement is enough to break the propolis; from there lift vertically and without tilting, because a tilted frame drags on the wall. And if the frame is really stuck, free it with the blade first and grip it afterwards — not the other way round.

03 · FIRST, MEASURE YOUR TOP BAR

Universal means 2.5 cm, not anything at all

The jaws are sized for the standard top bar of about 2.5 cm, which is what Langstroth, Spanish Dadant and Dadant Blatt frames use on the market. At that size it grips well and one-handed. But the limit is worth stating: on home-made frames or on some series with a thicker or rounded top bar — most often seen on Layens — the jaws do not close with the same pressure and can slip. It is a thirty-second job: measure the width of your frames' top bar before ordering.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is the everyday tool for an apiary of 5 to 50 hives: it covers the usual movement without paying for an articulated lever or premium jaws. If you are pulling frames at industrial pace all day, then moving up a grade earns its keep. It measures 13 × 16 cm and weighs 200 g, so it fits in a pocket rather than being left on the bench.
