Details of Fogues Frame grip for Layens

A Layens frame full of honey weighs close to four kilos and is glued down with propolis on all four sides. Two fingers will not get it out.

Galvanised steel frame grip, with the jaw opened to the width of the Layens top bar. The kind the Valencian workshops made their name with: articulated mechanism, nothing to lose, and a scraper on the tip.

01 · A GRIP, NOT A LEVER

Why the Layens asks for this tool

A Layens frame is tall and deep, so it comes out straight up and by hand: there is no sliding it sideways as in a super. The grip takes the top bar at both ends and spreads the pull instead of concentrating it on one point of the wood. That is what stops you splitting the bar and twisting the lugs on older frames.

The jaw is wider than on a grip for vertical hives, precisely because the Layens top bar is wider.

02 · THE ORDER OF THINGS

Break the seal first, lift second

The scraper on the tip comes before the grip: run it along the joint to break the propolis seal. An unstuck frame rises on its own; a stuck one makes you pull, pulling makes it swing, and swinging crushes bees against the neighbouring frames.

Then a straight, steady pull. Galvanising stands up to the weather, but it is worth scraping the propolis off and drying it at the end of the season.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is a tool for one specific format:

✕ DOES NOT FIT	Langstroth and Dadant: their top bar is narrower and there are grips built for that width.
