PER FRAME

Layens frame in pine, factory wired with four galvanised wires. It is the basic frame of the Spanish horizontal hive: almost square, 36.5 × 39.5 cm assembled, and left untensioned on purpose so that you set the tension before waxing.

The Layens is a single-body hive of twelve to sixteen frames: here the frame is the whole hive, there is no super to speak of.

01 · THE WIRE

It arrives slack, and tensioning is part of assembly

It carries four galvanised steel wires threaded through the side-bar holes, untensioned. It is the economical wiring of always, not stainless, which is why a pass at the bench before waxing is worth planning for: tension with a frame tensioner until the wire rings when plucked. A slack wire vibrates in the extractor and leaves the comb bowed, and on a Layens, loaded with honey in a big frame, that difference shows. While you are at it, check the staples of the frame too.

02 · THE SIZE AND THE FOUNDATION

36.5 × 39.5 the frame, 30 × 35 the sheet

The 36.5 × 39.5 cm is the size of the assembled frame, lugs included. The foundation that matches it is the Layens 30 × 35 cm: the sheet is always smaller than the frame because it does not reach the side bars, and the bees draw out that margin themselves. It fits standard Layens hives, nucs and nuc carriers. If your Layens is home-made or old, measure the inside before ordering a whole box.

03 · WITH OR WITHOUT THE PASSAGE

A decision worth taking beforehand

This is the straight Layens frame. We also carry the Layens with a passage rebate, which has a channel in the top bar so bees can move freely above the frame heads. If you feed with a bag or with paste laid over the frames, or put treatment strips up there, the rebate shows in how fast they take it. If not, the straight one does the same job for less. What is not worth doing is mixing the two in the same hive.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Supplied wired and untensioned, without foundation. It is reusable season after season: the wax is renewed, the wood stays.

✓ FITSStandard Layens hives, nucs and nuc carriers.
✕ DOESN’T FITLangstroth, Spanish Dadant and Dadant Blatt, which each take their own frame.

Overall they are all right, but just stapled without any glue and without checking for alignment... I have to rework every single frame. Even tightening the wire doesnt help. So i cant recommend this product. I ordered them because you dont get layens frames in germany. But all the other frames you get here like dadant or zander, they cost around 1,20€ per frame but are completely done, they are perfectly aligned and ready to use. Thats what i expect when i buy them. Otherwise i can build them all by myself, because cutting the wood is not really a matter if i have to properly align them anyways.
