01 · THE LAYENS FORMAT

Everything at one level: no heavy box to move

A Layens grows sideways, not upwards: all 12 frames are in the same box and you work through them one after another without dismantling anything. That changes the job — there is no 20 kg super to lift to reach the brood, and the hinged roof opens without you having to find somewhere to put it. It is the format that dominates in southern Spain. It has a double entrance: a perforated lower one and an upper one prepared for a pollen trap.

02 · THE FINISH AND THE PAINT

If you are going to paint it yourself, order it unpainted

This is a keenly priced hive and the finish matches the price: it pays to check the inside on arrival, because the odd staple or nail can stand proud, and to go over the frame edges. On the paint, the most repeated complaint: the factory coat takes its time to cure and is not always neat. That is why the unpainted option exists, and it costs less — if you plan to give it your own coat of linseed or water-based paint, that is the one to order. The grey and sand versions are for those who want it ready.

03 · WHAT COMES WITH IT

The 12 frames are inside; the foundation and the bees are not

The hive always ships with its 12 wired Layens frames — there is no empty version, which is how you avoid paying carriage on air. Internal dimensions: 50 × 56 × 43 cm. The roof is sheet metal, on side hinges with catches, and the corners are reinforced with metal brackets. What you buy separately is the foundation and, obviously, the bees.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is the entry-level Layens: the one you buy by the unit to expand without stretching the budget. If you want a fine finish — jointed timber, clean edges — there are models above it, and it shows in the price. And remember that a Layens frame is not interchangeable with Dadant or Langstroth.
