Details of Hive tool Hercules 300 mm
Thirty centimetres of leverage will lift a stuck super. They will also snap a top bar, if you lever where you shouldn't.
American-pattern hive tool, 300 mm long and 2.5 mm thick. A bevelled edge at one end and a hooked end at the other: the big version of the usual tool, with more arm and more steel.
01 · THE TWO ENDS
One edge to scrape, one hook to lift
The bevelled edge scrapes propolis and wax off top bars, crown boards and floors. The hooked end, bent to 90°, levers stuck supers apart and frees frames from the rebate.
Beside the hook there is a keyhole-shaped slot: a nail puller, which saves fetching the pincers.
02 · THE LEVER ARM
What you gain and what you can break
At 30 cm the force multiplies far more than with a short hive tool, and hence the one rule that matters: lever against the rim of the box, never against the top bar. With this much steel, the pine gives first.
On a badly glued frame, cut the propolis down both sides first and lift afterwards.
03 · WHEN IT PAYS
Against the short hive tool
The 30 cm are awkward in a pocket and you feel them in your hand by the end of the day. In exchange, they are what gets out a super that has not been opened in two seasons.
