01 · COMPATIBILITY

Three containers, and a bigger sibling with another finish

It closes the 41 ml B1.5 ounce jar and the 33 ml B1 ounce jar. The pack of 40 is meant for the two ounce jars, sold in packs of 40, so the sum comes out even there; the Diamond comes in tens. And mind the Diamond family: the 300 g shares this 43 finish but has a tall neck and takes the deep skirt, and the 500 g is TO 48.

02 · CLOSING A SMALL FINISH

The turn is short: it feels loose, and it is not

At 43 mm the lug travels a very short way along the glass ramp, so the movement ends at once and it feels as if you must force it home. You do not: the seal is made by the compound against the rim, and tightening only has to bring the lid to its stop. Turn until you feel it and let go. Over-tightening 0.14 mm metal deforms the skirt, and a deformed lid never seats properly again. The whole travel is a quarter turn: if it grates or feels like the thread has stripped, lift the lid off and set it down flat again — there is no thread to strip, a lug has ridden over its ramp.

03 · IF IT DOES NOT FIT

Nearly always the skirt, not the diameter

Some 43 mm jars have a longer neck, and there is a different lid for those: the deep-skirt TO 43 H14, which in our range comes in black only, in packs of 20. Same diameter, same four lugs, deeper skirt. Put this one on a deep-finish jar and it will not seat however far you turn. And if the jar is reused from commercial preserves, measure first: the finish may match while the rim already carries the mark of its first closure.
