01 · THE LID: TO 66, BUT DEEP

A tall finish means a deep skirt

This jar has a longer neck than usual — that is what the tall finish means — and so it calls for a TO 66 Deep, deep-skirt lid. A standard TO 66 has the same diameter and therefore looks right, but its skirt is shorter: it sits without covering the whole neck, the liner does not bear where it should, and the seal ends up loose or simply does not pull a vacuum. It is the costliest mistake in this jar family, because you do not see it until the buttons fail to go down. Check that the lid says Deep or deep skirt, not just TO 66.

02 · HOW MUCH HONEY REALLY FITS

212 ml is the glass; the grams come from your fill

The 212 ml is the brim-full capacity. Since honey weighs around 1.4 g per millilitre, a jar filled to the top would give about 300 g — but nobody packs that way: you need headspace to close without overflowing and to let the vacuum work. With a normal fill you get roughly 260 to 290 g, and the exact figure depends on your honey (denser or wetter), the packing temperature and how much neck you leave. Hence the house rule, always the same: weigh the first jars of the batch before you order the labels printed.

03 · THE GLASS AND THE PACK

73 mm across, 71 tall and 25 to a pack

It is a wide, low jar — 73 mm across by 71 tall — the sort you take in one hand and that shows the product well on a shelf or a market stall. The glass is flint, genuinely clear, so the colour of the honey shows exactly as it is: with pale honeys that sells, with very dark ones it is worth knowing. Each jar weighs 145 g empty, a figure to add in if you have to declare packaging weight or work out shipping. The pack holds 25 units, a comfortable amount for small production or for trying a new format without committing to a pallet.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Lids are not included and are ordered separately — and it bears repeating: TO 66 Deep. The jar serves equally for pollen, spreads, jams and preserves, provided the closure and the process suit that product. And before filling, run a finger round the rim of the glass: a chipped mouth will not hold a vacuum however good the lid.
