Hexagonal glass jar of 390 ml with a TO 70 mouth, the half-kilo jar with a flat face, supplied in a pack of 23.
The lid is not included: the mouth is TO 70 and the lid is chosen separately, as with the whole twist-off range.
01 · HOW MUCH HONEY IT HOLDS
This is the half-kilo jar of a lifetime. Level capacity is 390 ml and honey weighs around 1.4 kg a litre, so filled to the brim it would come to some 545 g: the nominal 500 g comes out once you leave the air the lid needs. A pack of 23 therefore bottles a little over eleven and a half kilos.
02 · THE MOUTH RULES
Which lid fits is decided by the diameter of the mouth: here it is TO 70, and any standard twist-off lid of that size will do. Those 70 mm are not only convenience when filling — once the honey crystallises, a wide mouth is the difference between scraping the jar out with a teaspoon and fighting it, and the customer notices that at home, which is where the second sale is decided.
03 · WHY HEXAGONAL
The first is obvious: it does not roll. On a fair table or in the delivery tray, a jar that stays put is a jar that does not end up on the floor. The second is about the label — on a flat face it does not bulge or crease, so the print looks straight; in exchange, the label has to be narrow enough for a single face. It is a jar for a special harvest, and it works just as well for jams and spreads.
04 · FILLING IT
Wash and dry the jar before filling: a drop of water in the bottom is moisture the honey takes up. Leave a finger of air under the lid so the seal beds down, and keep the filled jars away from the light and somewhere cool. Glass protects from oxygen but not from the sun, and the sun is what darkens a pale honey in the shop window.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Supplied in packs of 23 and without lids. The glass weighs 230 g a jar, so a full pack comes to around 17 kg between honey and glass.
