01 · TO 66 STANDARD, NOT DEEP

The check that avoids the error

The Saldae 520 has a standard mouth, so it takes a TO 66 lid with a shallow skirt. The house rule does not fail: if the jar's name does not say «deep mouth», «Deep» or «DTO», the lid is the shallow one.

The lids are not included and are ordered separately, plain or printed. A deep TO 66 will not close properly on this glass however well the diameter matches.

02 · 520 ML IS 700 G OF HONEY

The conversion before choosing a format

Fill capacity is 520 ml, and honey weighs around 1.4 kg a litre: filled to the shoulder that comes to about 700 g.

If your selling format is half a kilo, this jar is too big for you — 500 g takes about 357 ml and the gap shows. For a 700-750 g format it is a perfect fit. With honey and thick sauces, leave 8-10 mm under the lid: it cuts foam and drips when closing.

03 · WITH HONEY THERE IS NO VACUUM

And it is not a faulty lid

For jams and preserves hot filling can make sense, warming the jar first to avoid thermal shock. With honey it does not apply: it is jarred cold and keeps on its own.

Which brings a consequence that generates complaints: with honey the lid button does not pop down and there is no click, because without heat no vacuum forms. The closure is mechanical — set it flat, turn a quarter turn to the stop and stop there. TO 66 lids have four lugs, and forcing on bends one and leaves the jar impossible to open.

04 · THE SIZE FOR THE LABELLER

And what the box weighs

It measures 94 mm across by 130 tall, cylindrical and smooth: it goes comfortably into a hand roll-on labeller and into crank machines that take up to 150 mm of height.

Each jar weighs 275 g empty, so the sixteen come to about 4.4 kg of glass. With 700 g of honey inside, a full jar is around a kilo — which is the number that drives the shipping if you sell online.
