01 · HOW MUCH HONEY IT HOLDS

140 ml is about 200 grams

Capacity is in volume and honey sells by weight: at 1.4 kg a litre, these 140 ml come to some 200 g of honey. A pack of 25 therefore gives you five kilos shared out. At 72.5 mm across and 51.5 mm tall it is wider than it is high, and you notice that in the hand: it sits well and you can scrape it clean with a teaspoon.

02 · THE FAVOUR-SIZED FORMAT

Weddings, communions and christenings

This is the size used for the table favour: enough to be a real gift rather than a sample, and cheap enough per unit to make a hundred. The cylindrical shape and clear glass show the colour of the honey, which is half the present, and the flat lid takes a round label personalised with the date or the name.

03 · THE MOUTH RULES

TO 66, and only TO 66

Which lid fits is decided by the diameter of the mouth: here it is TO 66, and any standard twist-off lid of that size will do. It is not the commonest size in the range, so buy the lids in the same order — that is the usual mistake with this format, ending up with twenty-five full jars and nothing to close them with.

04 · BEYOND HONEY

Jams, pâtés and preserves

The same jar is used for jam, pâté, conserve or spices, and it takes repeated use: the glass weighs 106 g a piece, which for this size is a thick wall. Wash and dry it before filling, and if you are filling hot, warm the jar first so as not to give it a thermal shock.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Supplied in packs of 25 and without lids. The mouth is TO 66, less common than TO 63 or TO 70: check that the lids you have are that size.
