The work is by Fina Gonell Galindo, Marta Pitarch Bielsa and Antonio Gómez Pajuelo, published by Pajuelo Consultores Apícolas. This is the fourth edition, of 2025, with content updated to that year and an illustrated annex on bee anatomy.

And that order is half the method

The guide does not start at the brood frame: it starts at the surroundings and the entrance. Recent weather, available flows, the pollen coming in, the stores you should expect; and then the hive entrance, to read mortality, expelled debris, the look of the bees or signs of robbing.

Only then do you open. Inside, the field tables cross brood, population, stores and symptoms against reference photographs, covering malnutrition, viruses, bacteria, fungi and mites. One piece of management advice is worth the price on its own: inspect the colonies that look healthy first and leave the suspect ones for last, so you do not carry material between them.

03 · TO TAKE TO THE APIARY

Where a PDF beats paper

The digital format changes the use: the book travels on the phone you already carry, it searches by word, and it does not get wet or covered in propolis. You can look at a photograph of a symptom in front of the hive and note date, apiary, flow, stores and brood pattern to compare on the next visit.

Paper has its own virtues — 21 × 22 cm, 240 g, it gets passed around on a course — and that is why we still sell both. If the book is going to live on the honey-house table, take the printed one; if it is going to live with you, take this.

04 · A GUIDE, NOT A DIAGNOSIS

And the book says so itself

A photograph or a table of symptoms gathers evidence: it does not confirm a disease and it does not authorise a treatment. What the book teaches is exactly when a sample or a diagnostic laboratory is needed, which is the part people skip.

And there is something no book can keep current: which medicines are authorised at any given moment. Registers change, and so do health obligations. Faced with serious symptoms, a suspected notifiable disease or a doubt about treatment, you ask the competent authority or the vet, not the index.
