LANGUAGE OF THE TEXT

The book that came out of the course the Málaga Beekeepers’ Association runs every year, and that more than 700 beekeepers have been through.

It is not a translated manual: it was written in Spain, around the hives used there —Langstroth, Dadant and Layens— and the problems found there, from the bee-eater to Vespa velutina. 311 pages, colour throughout.

01 · CONTENTS

From bee anatomy to keeping hive records

It starts with the basics and goes well past them. The bee: anatomy, castes, the colony, polyethism, communication and the dances, swarming and mating flights. The hive: floors and roofs, the three common formats —Langstroth, Dadant and Layens— and the beekeeper’s toolkit. Management: siting the apiary by forage, water, orientation and access; splits and increase; blind-nucleus and queenless-nucleus methods; flight changes and fan splitting; simplified queen rearing.

02 · CALENDAR

The beekeeper’s year, season by season

A whole block laid out by the calendar: what winter calls for, spring with swarm control, summer, and autumn with preparation for overwintering. Alongside it, productive management —stimulating the colony going into winter, when to work with supers, why wax matters and how to keep hive records— and a block of its own for production: harvesting honey, pollen, wax, royal jelly, propolis and crop pollination.

03 · HIVE HEALTH

Pages 235 to 298: disease and everything else that goes wrong

Brood diseases (chalkbrood, American and European foulbrood) and adult bee diseases (nosema type A and type C, sacbrood virus, acute and chronic paralysis virus, deformed wing virus). Varroa gets its own section: the mite’s cycle, how it moves through the year, signs, monitoring, screened floors, treatments and integrated control. Then the chapter on adversities: drone-laying colonies, robbing, wax moth, Vespa crabro, Vespa velutina, the bee-eater, Aethina tumida and poisoning.

04 · WHO IT’S FOR

From a first hive to years behind you

It grew out of a course for beginners, so it explains from scratch; but it reaches integrated varroa control, hive records and a closing block on the Spanish beekeeping sector, its structure and its figures. The bibliography closes the book on page 311.
