This book, written in French, is an essential guide for beekeepers, both beginners and experienced. Throughout the year, author Jean Riondet guides you month by month in managing your apiary with clear and detailed explanations.
Beekeeping manual arranged month by month, with photographs and technical illustrations, by Jean Riondet. Weather, flowering, biology and the month's work. In French.
It is written in French and there is no English edition. That comes first because it decides the purchase; the rest of the book is one of the good ones.
01 · WHAT EACH MONTH BRINGS
Every month opens with the weather and the flowering — to anticipate the flow — goes on to bee biology and the life of the colony, and ends in the tasks: those of the apiary and those of the workshop, which are usually the ones forgotten.
That is the structure that makes a month-by-month book useful: it does not describe beekeeping, it lays it out on the calendar. It also covers queen rearing, treatments and health precautions.
02 · THE CALENDAR IS FRENCH
In a plant guide, latitude shifts the dates. In a management manual it shifts the whole job: further south the season starts weeks earlier, and the summer dearth — which governs the year across much of southern Europe — barely appears in a calendar written for France.
As method and as judgement it works just as well: what to do and why. As a literal diary, it has to be shifted.
03 · WHO WROTE IT
Jean Riondet has spent more than two decades teaching beekeeping, writes for the magazine Abeilles et fleurs and keeps a blog of advice on Beehoo.
The language is accessible and the explanations go step by step, so reading French is enough to follow it — which is exactly the profile of whoever buys this book.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It is a French book on a French calendar. If you want management for a Mediterranean climate, you will be translating it twice.
