Broad-tip POSCA® marker (2.5 mm), water-based paint, for marking queens with the international colour code: 2026 white, 2027 yellow, 2028 red, 2029 green, 2030 blue. Prime it on paper before going near the queen and rest the tip without pressing: the first blob tends to come out too big.

Details of Queen Marking pen POSCA®

The broad-tip POSCA® marker: water-based paint, one dot on the thorax and your queen is identified.

It is the marker half the beekeeping world uses for this. Five colours, one per year of the international code; the price is the same for all of them.

01 · THE TECHNIQUE

Prime the marker before it goes near the queen

Nearly every marking that goes wrong goes wrong the same way: the first blob is too big. Shake the marker, press it a couple of times onto a piece of paper until the ink runs fine and even, and only then go for the queen. When marking, rest the tip, do not press it: press and the valve releases a gush that paints half her back. A small dot in the centre of the thorax — never on head, eyes, wings or abdomen — is enough to spot her from a metre away.

02 · THE COLOUR CODE

One colour per year, repeating every five

2026 · Whiteyears ending in 1 and 6
2027 · Yellowyears ending in 2 and 7
2028 · Redyears ending in 3 and 8
2029 · Greenyears ending in 4 and 9
2030 · Blueyears ending in 5 and 0

The colour is not decoration: it tells you at a glance how old the queen is and whether it is time to plan a replacement, without opening the notebook.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Marking while holding the queen in your fingers is the fast route to an accident. If you are not practised, use a plunger marking cage: it holds her against a mesh, you mark through the gaps and release her once the paint has dried, not before.

✓ GOOD FORMarking queens, and also numbering supers, frames or nucs.
⚠ BEAR IN MINDSold per unit and colour. The marking cage is separate.
