Details of Queen catcher clip

Transparent plastic clip to catch and hold the queen without touching her with your fingers. With side slots that let workers pass through but prevent the queen from escaping. The beekeeper's basic tool for marking, transporting, introducing or examining queens — the most widely used model in queen rearing and routine management.

🐝 Transparent — you see what you are doing

The transparent plastic lets you observe the queen while you hold her: whether she has eggs in her abdomen, her size, previous marking, possible damage. Opaque clips force you to open and close to look, multiplying the risks of escape or damage. Transparency is decisive in marking (you control the exact position before applying the marker) and in introduction (you verify the queen is still alive before releasing her).

🔒 Side slots — traps queen, frees workers

The side slots are the key piece of the design: they let worker bees through (so they can feed the queen) but prevent the queen from escaping due to her size and the curvature of the abdomen. This lets you keep the queen inside the clip for minutes without fear of losing her, and keep her alive thanks to the workers feeding her during transport or the acclimation period when you introduce a new queen into a queenless hive.

💡 When to use it — the three moments

Marking: hold the queen, wait until she is still on the frame and apply the year's colour on the thorax with a POSCA marker or similar. Transport/introduction: move the queen between hives or from the mating bank to the final nuc, keeping her protected and fed by the workers. Examination: check the queen's physical state (intact wings, full abdomen, no visible parasites) before buying, receiving or introducing her.
