Marking a queen while gripping her in your hand is where queens get damaged. This tube keeps her still against the mesh, abdomen free, for exactly as long as it takes to mark her.

01 · ASSEMBLY

How it is used, step by step

Put the queen into the tube and raise the plunger slowly, until she sits just behind the mesh. That is where you mark her, with a suitable marker pen (POSCA type) or a numbered disc. The workers pass straight through the screen and leave on their own; the queen does not.

02 · HIVE HEALTH

What decides whether it goes well

Three things, and none of them is the tool. Do not press on the abdomen or the legs as you raise the plunger. Let the mark dry before you put her back on the comb. And do not handle her with hands carrying strong smells, or use paints that are not suitable.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

You do not choose the colour

Marking follows the international code by year of birth: years ending in 0 or 5 blue · 1 or 6 white · 2 or 7 yellow · 3 or 8 red · 4 or 9 green. The colour tells you when the queen was born and nothing else — it is no indication of quality, race or mating.
