Details of Layens plastic queen excluder 370x510mmm

This plastic queen excluder is cut to 370 × 510 mm for use on a Layens fitted with a super. It is placed between the brood box and the upper space: worker bees can pass through the mesh, whilst the queen remains below and does not climb up to lay eggs in the frames intended for honey.

📐 This is for the Layens with a super, not for any Layens hive

The classic Layens combines brood and honey in the same body and does not normally require a horizontal queen excluder. This part is useful when the hive has been prepared to accommodate a super or another separate super. Before ordering it, measure the usable space in your setup: the name of the hive does not guarantee that all modifications will have the same dimensions.

⚠️ Fit the part in place before closing

The cut-out is done by hand. Check that the grid lies flat, without curving or leaving a gap at the side through which the queen could pass. It must not obstruct the passage at the edge or become trapped by the lid. The grid also restricts the passage of drones; avoid leaving drones on top without an available exit.

🧹 Keep propolis under control to maintain the passage

Check the grid when lifting the super and carefully remove any wax and propolis bridges that narrow the openings. When first installing the super, check the assembly again after a few days to look for raised edges, blocked passages or an unusual build-up of bees before replacing the super. If the colony is abnormally restricting upward movement, check the population, nectar flow and condition of the grid: a queen excluder organises the space, but does not force the bees to occupy a super they do not yet need.
