Details of Varrojet

Hand-held battery smoker that burns a paper strip in its chamber and drives the smoke in through the hive entrance.

This is the original model. No bellows and no embers: the strip burns for about ten seconds and a button pushes the smoke inside. It is built for small operations, where speed from hive to hive matters more than running time.

01 · HOW IT WORKS

One strip, ten seconds, on to the next

You place a strip in the chamber, light it and press the button: the internal fan drives the smoke out through the nozzle, which goes into the hive entrance. The strip finishes burning in about ten seconds, so the cycle per hive is short and nothing has to stay alight between one and the next. It runs on two 1.5 V batteries, with no cables and no fuel tank.

02 · THE CONSUMABLE

Strips, not pellets

This is the usual mix-up, especially for anyone who has seen it on video: the Varrojet does not take pellets or tablets. It burns impregnated paper strips, sold separately in packs of 30, and they are what produces the combustion. The device is only the carrier: the strip supplies the heat and the smoke, and the fan directs it. Buy the unit and the strips together if it is your first time, because without strips there is nothing to burn.

03 · COMPATIBILITY

It goes into any standard hive entrance

The nozzle is made for the entrances the trade actually uses: it works the same on Langstroth, Layens and Dadant, the three sizes that cover almost the whole stock. There is no version to pick by hive type and no nozzle to swap. Where the limit does show is in numbers: hive by hive it is quick, but it is a hand-held device.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

What decides here is not the device, it is what you are going to burn in it. The Varrojet applies smoke: the substance and the route of application have to come from the data sheet of an authorised medicine, not from the device. Read the precautions before buying, because they change what you can do with it.

PRECAUTIONS

Authorised medicines only. In Spain any home-made varroa treatment is an unlawful application carrying criminal and administrative liability, and that includes preparing the substance yourself; in other countries check what is authorised locally. Registered medicines are listed in the health section of this site, and the dose and the route are those on their current data sheet.

The device authorises nothing by itself. It is a smoker: it does not make what burns inside it either legal or effective. A substance burning well does not mean it is approved for that route of application.

You are working with fire. Light it away from flammable material and away from dry ground at the apiary, and do not put it away until the chamber is cold.
