01 · HOW IT IS HEATED

A burner underneath, not a generator

The water goes into the boiler's own double base and is topped up through its filling tube. Underneath goes a heat source — a gas burner is the usual choice, and it is not included — and the machine produces the steam itself.

By design, then, it is not meant to be coupled to an external steam generator: the boiler is the generator. And the one rule that prevents the classic breakdown is simple — watch the water level and never let it run dry.

02 · THE WAX COMES OUT DARKER

Steam works at 100 °C

Beeswax melts at 62-65 °C and starts to darken above roughly 85 °C. A steam renderer works around 100 °C, so the wax comes out darker than from a solar melter.

That is the price of speed and volume: here you render whole frames in an afternoon. If you want pale wax for candles, a solar melter gives better colour; for recycling old comb and recovering the material, this is the way.

03 · AND IT DISINFECTS

Steam sterilises the frame

The detail that usually goes unnoticed: the frames come out with their wiring intact and ready to reuse, having passed through steam at 100 °C. That is also a sanitary treatment of the frame, which matters when renewing old comb or recovering equipment from a lost colony.

The wax that runs out into the mould carries water and debris: let it settle and remelt it clean. Nothing comes out of here ready to sell.
