01 · THE SIZE

40/49 are two diameters, and the second is the one that counts

The designation 40/49 corresponds to 1½″ and refers to two different figures: 40 is the nominal internal diameter — the bore — and 49 the outside of the thread, which is what has to pass through the vessel wall. The hole is cut to that second figure, with a hole saw; it ends up tight by design, because the gasket needs to bear on material and not on the air of an oversized hole. Before drilling anything, check the thread or the housing you already have: measuring only the outlet spout is the mistake that leads to buying the wrong valve.

02 · FITTING AND SEALING

If it drips, tightening harder will not fix it

The gasket goes inside the vessel and must bear flat all the way round; the nut tightens from outside, evenly and without distorting the body. Fit it and test with water before any honey goes in: fill above the outlet and leave it a few minutes. If damp appears, the instinct to tighten further is exactly wrong — a gasket that is badly seated, or has a speck under it, does not seal by pressure, and forcing the nut only warps the wall. Take it off, clean the seat and refit it.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The lever lifts the gate and clears the passage; the residual drip on closing depends on how thick and how cold the honey is. At the end of the run, clean the accessible parts before the honey crystallises around the plate and the gasket, which is what stiffens the valve for the following season.
