Bag of 25 kg of white granulated sugar to be used as a raw material in the preparation of energy feed for bees. This format allows you to make syrups or sugar pastes depending on your management objectives, but it is not a complete feed: it provides carbohydrates and does not replace pollen, protein or the need to check the colony’s stores.

🐝 First, decide whether you are aiming to maintain or stimulate

It is not advisable to prepare the same feed routinely throughout the year. A liquid feed may be suitable when temperatures are high, the colony is sufficiently large and the aim is to stimulate; a more concentrated or solid preparation may be more appropriate for topping up stores or keeping feed readily available. Before mixing, check the weight, reserves, nectar and pollen intake, colony strength and the weather forecast. If there is a protein deficiency, adding more sugar will not resolve this shortfall.

🥄 Clean preparation without unnecessary heat

Use drinking water, clean containers and utensils reserved for feeding. Simply warm the water to aid dissolution: boiling or reheating repeatedly does not improve the syrup and increases heat stress. Prepare an amount commensurate with expected consumption, avoid spillage in the apiary and remove any residue with a sour smell, foam, gas or signs of fermentation. The feeder should be placed near the active area and allow access without the bees drowning.

📅 Feed with a specific aim and a target date for removal

Adjust the quantity and frequency to what each colony consumes; a strong colony and a weak one do not process the same volume in the same way. Avoid feeding during a commercial honey flow or when using supers intended for harvest, as the feed may end up being stored in the combs. If stimulation is started before a flowering period, it must be sustained if the flowering is delayed: stopping abruptly may leave a developed colony without sufficient resources.

⚠️ The 25 kg bag must be stored in a dry place

Keep the bag sealed, in a dry, clean place, off the floor and away from damp walls, odours and chemicals. Once opened, reseal it tightly and use a dry scoop: moisture causes the sugar to clump and can lead to spoilage in subsequent preparations. The large pack size is worthwhile where there is a high turnover rate; for a small number of hives, calculate in advance how much you will use so as not to keep the raw material open for too long.
