Details of Metal Drum for honey 300kg

Two hundred and thirty litres is the drum; three hundred kilos is the honey that fits leaving headroom. They are not the same figure.

Steel drum of 230 litres with removable lid, lever ring and metal band, lined inside with food-grade lacquer. For storing or settling around 300 kg of honey.

01 · THE INSIDE COATING

What makes it a honey drum

A bare steel drum is no good for honey: honey is acidic and would end up attacking the metal and staining the product. What makes this one suitable is the food-grade lacquer lining declared by the maker.

From that comes the precaution that extends its life most: if the lacquer gets scratched, the drum is no longer suitable. Scraping cappings off the bottom with a metal scraper or dragging tools around inside is the fastest way to ruin a new one.

02 · THE CLOSURE

Removable lid and lever ring

The lid comes off completely and is held by a lever ring, plus the metal band. That is what lets you put things in and take them out through the full opening rather than only pouring — and it is the difference from a small-mouth drum.

The drum is supplied without a tap. If you are going to settle honey, the tap fits in the wall, and what decides the size is the hole, not the litres.

03 · THE DIMENSIONS

Inside and out

It measures 882 mm high and Ø 571 mm inside, and 915 × Ø 605 mm outside. Both figures matter: the inside one governs what will fit in it, the outside one where you put it and what it will pass through.

It weighs around 30 kg empty, so full it is close to 330. That number decides whether you move it with a sack truck or you don't move it.

04 · WHAT ELSE IT'S GOOD FOR

Once it is no longer holding honey

An empty drum is one of the most reused pieces in a honey house:

Other useHow
Apiary drinkerFilled with water and a cork or float on top so the bees don't drown
Syrup vatFor making up liquid stimulation syrup
Uncapping benchWith the rack and the strainer on top
Cappings tankTo collect and store the uncapped wax

The drinker has a catch: without a cork or float on the surface, the bees drown. With one, it is the steadiest drinker you can set up.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is the drum with its lid and ring:

✓ FITSStoring and settling bulk honey, and honey-house uses once it is free.
✕ DOES NOT FITScraping the inside with a metal tool: it ruins the lacquer.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDTap, rack or strainer.
