Three pieces and no bench

The cappings fall into the drum mixed with honey. The sieve separates them: the honey passes the mesh and gathers at the bottom, the wax stays on top.

The 550 mm diameter is made for the mouth of a standard honey drum. Check the inside of yours before ordering.

02 · WHY 235 MM TALL

So the wax does not sit in the honey

That height is not styling: it is what keeps the cappings clear of the honey gathering below. If the wax sits in the liquid it neither drains nor stops shedding.

The two handles are for lifting it out full, which is when it is heavy and sticky. A sieve without handles gets lifted with your hands inside it, and that is honey lost.

03 · HOW LONG IT DRAINS

Warm, and with patience

The cappings drain on their own, by gravity, and they do it far better warm: freshly uncapped and at honey-house temperature, not the next day and cold.

For most people, a few hours of draining is enough. If you want the last drop, that is where a cappings press comes in — but you do not need one for a good yield.

04 · IT'S ZINC-COATED, NOT STAINLESS

And that asks for one care

The body is zinc-coated steel, not stainless. The protection is the zinc layer, so what has to be avoided is scratching it: no scraping stuck wax off with a metal scraper.

And dry it after washing. A honey house is damp, and rust always starts where the coating has gone.
